Studying in London might seem expensive, but with a little planning, you can enjoy the city without overspending. Here's how you can make the most of your time at FRA while staying within your budget.

Take Advantage of Student Discounts

Being a student comes with plenty of perks, including access to great discounts! By signing up for platforms like UniDays and Student Beans with your FRA email address, you can unlock deals on fashion, tech, food, travel and more. Big names like ASOS, Nike and Boots regularly offer student deals, so always check before you buy. Even cinema tickets and train fares are often discounted for students, helping your budget go further.

Make the Most of Electra House

Electra House has everything you need to save money during your studies. The library is packed with useful resources, so you won't need to spend on expensive textbooks. Free water stations on every floor mean you can fill up your reusable bottle instead of buying drinks, and the on-site café has affordable snack and lunch options when you're in need of a quick bite. These little savings add up fast!

Bring Your Own Lunch

Packing your own lunch is one of the easiest ways to save money. It's not only cheaper than eating out but also gives you the chance to eat healthier. If you want to treat yourself to something nearby, consider joining loyalty schemes like Tesco Clubcard and M&S Sparks to get discounts on food and drinks.

London is full of scenic spots where you can enjoy your lunch, like Finsbury Circus Gardens, St Paul's Churchyard and Broadgate Circle, all just a short walk from Electra House.

Shop Smart

You can save money and help the planet shopping second-hand on platforms like Depop, Vinted or in local charity shops. It's a great way to find unique, affordable pieces while reducing waste.

If you prefer high-street shopping, Cheapside is just a 10-minute walk from Electra House and has budget-friendly stores like Zara, H&M and Superdrug. Always ask about student discounts to get more for your money!

Save on Travel

Travel can be one of the biggest expenses in London, but there are ways to cut costs. While studying in London, you can apply for a Student Oyster Card to save on bus, tube and tram fares.

If you're 16 or 17, the 16-17 Saver Railcard gives you 50% off train travel, including peak times, for just £30. It's valid for 12 months or until your 18th birthday. For those aged 16-30, the 16-25 and 26-30 Railcards offer 1/3 off train fares. These are perfect for longer commutes or travel outside London.

If you live nearby, consider cycling to Electra House - cycling is a great way to save on transport costs. The building even has bike storage for your convenience.

Enjoy Free Activities

London is full of free things to do! Check out the Sky Garden or the rooftop at 120 Fenchurch Street for stunning views of the city, both free to visit and only a short walk from FRA. Another hidden gem is the Barbican Conservatory, a tropical garden inside the Barbican Centre, which is also free to visit, where you can unwind, take photos or enjoy a quiet break.

Studying in London doesn't have to be expensive if you know how to make the most of what's available. From student discounts and free activities to smart travel and shopping tips, there are plenty of ways to stick to your budget while enjoying everything the city has to offer.
