Over the past few weeks, our Level 3 Fashion Retail students have been on some exciting trips to the Barbie Exhibition, Harrods and Selfridges. Here's a look at their action-packed day!
The day began at The Design Museum in Kensington, where students explored The Barbie Exhibition, celebrating 65 years of Barbie. The exhibition featured over 250 unique dolls, from rare collectibles to modern designs, showing how Barbie has shaped trends over the decades.
For our students, the visit was an inspiring opportunity to see how nostalgic toys connect with fashion and inspire new trends. It tied perfectly into their current projects, where they were tasked with selecting a toy and designing a fashion collaboration with a brand. Real-life examples, such as the Balmain x Barbie collection, provided valuable inspiration, encouraging them to think creatively and refine their ideas.
The trip was perfect for primary research - even if you're doing a different type of toy, it's so interesting to see how the collaborations work. It was also really cool to see the first-ever Barbie and all the outfits they made! Nattasha, Level 3 Fashion Retail student
Next, students visited Harrods and Selfridges, two of the world's most famous department stores. They explored different floors, comparing designer brands, bridge brands and high street retailers to see how each creates a unique shopping experience.
As part of their studies, students examined where products are made, identified visual merchandising trends and gained inspiration for upcoming projects. Seeing real-world retail strategies firsthand was invaluable for developing their knowledge of branding, marketing and customer experience.
There's no better way to learn than from industry professionals, like Selfridges and Harrods. Students can then apply those techniques into their projects. We apply theory in class, but it's great for students to step into the real world and see how it's put into practice! Meliana, Level 3 Fashion Retail tutor
The Level 3 Fashion Retail Diploma is a two-year course introducing students to careers in fashion management, communications and visual merchandising. It's perfect for those wanting to explore different areas of fashion retail before deciding on a specialism.
