At the Fashion Retail Academy, our students never fail to impress us, and this Christmas was no exception. Abby and Jess, two BA (Hons) Fashion Communication & Styling students, won an exciting competition hosted by YOU Magazine.
Their challenge was to design a couture-inspired gown entirely from Dunelm Christmas wrapping paper. Their bold, innovative design secured first place and was featured in the magazine, with additional coverage on YOU Magazine's blog on the Daily Mail.
Abby and Jess were tasked with creating a gown featuring a long train made entirely from wrapping paper, ensuring the material remained intact. With just over two weeks to complete the project, they had to push their creative limits and manage their time effectively.
Their success came from a balance of individual skills and teamwork. Jess taught herself origami using YouTube tutorials to create intricate stars for the bodice. Meanwhile, Abby mastered the art of rolling wrapping paper into Christmas cracker-inspired shapes for the skirt.
The result was a design that captured their vision and impressed the judges.

Abby's advice for future students:
Be experimental and explore different creative capabilities!
Creating the gown required precision to avoid damaging the delicate material. Jess prepared the origami stars in advance, while Abby worked on the cone-shaped elements. Using wire, they ensured the components were secure and easy to assemble.
On the day of the photoshoot, they fitted the dress onto their model, Stephanie, making final adjustments to perfect the look!
The highlight of the project was seeing their winning concept come to life during the professional photoshoot for YOU Magazine. With guidance from Victoria Gray, interiors editor at YOU Magazine, Abby and Jess showcased their work in a professional setting.
The finished dress was a stunning example of their creativity, teamwork and ability to deliver under pressure.
