Overview


On this course, taught at the Fashion Retail Academy campus, you’ll receive an introduction to fabrics and how they are made.

You’ll understand the key fibres used in garments today, and how they are manufactured into yarns and fabrics. You’ll explore woven and knitted fabrics and learn how to identify them and their properties. 

You’ll discover the role of the garment technologist, and learn about fabric production, suitable end uses for fabrics, typical faults and why they happen, and new developments in fabrics as well as fabric production impact and sustainability measures. 

By the end of the course, you’ll have developed an understanding of the production of fabrics, the different types of fabrics and their benefits, and learnt some techniques to identify fabrics. 

TUTOR


Sian Bladen-Hill has 35 years of experience working for brands including M&S and Disney. She has designed and developed products including womenswear, childrenswear and menswear, and is passionate about creating garments, concept sketching and fabric sourcing.
